110 Acre Pastoral Estate - Carmel, Indiana
This 110 acre site was a gently rolling meadow at the onset of the project. The owner's goals were clear: develop wildlife and fowl habitat, embellish the pastoral character of the land, minimize maintenance, screen adjacent development and utilize the horse farm to imbue a peaceful rural setting. The overriding project constraint included the existence of non-native exotic and pioneer species and current development encroachments eliminating large tracts of wildlife habitat.
Remenschneider Associates prepared a detailed palette for landscape development that utilizes native Indiana plant communities. A combination of evergreen trees and additional reforestation plantings appended to an existing neighboring woodland. Meadow and prairie plantings cover the bulk of the former farm and are frequented by a growing diverse bird population. Ornamental plantings are confined to the property entrance and the residence with horse farm fencing adding to the pastoral character of surrounding acreage. To the owner's delight, initial plantings of woodland and evergreen trees prompted a noticeable increase in wildlife within weeks of installation.
